Abstract
This article traces the structural parallelization of femininity and infirmity in terms of the normatively deficient in the long history of women artists‘ biographies. Taking Maike Christadler’s groundbreaking study on the relationship between creativity and gender in art historiography as a starting point, it outlines the narrative of equating femininity and infirmity in art historiography since the mythical role model of Iaia/Marcia and asks about counter-representations to biography in self-portraits of artists such as Sofonisba Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Frida Kahlo.
